William Vélez passed away in May 2025 after suffering a severe fall at the Clínica Astorga in Medellín three days earlier. Because he was a high-risk patient who refused assistance to the bathroom, the clinic officially documented that there was no negligence. However, beyond the medical circumstances, the true unresolved conflict was who would take command of his business empire. Today, the Sandra Velez Mes inheritance case keeps the family deeply divided in court.
The William Vélez Older Sister Takes Command of the Empire
Following the businessman’s death, Sandra María Vélez Mesa, the William Vélez older sister who already held strategic positions within the companies, quickly consolidated the administration of the entire Grupo Ethuss.
In contrast, the situation for the rest of the family was drastically different. Following various corporate movements executed in Colombia and Panama, Lina María Vélez Gaviria claims she was completely shut out of the business. According to her version, she was blocked from corporate information, decision-making, and access to the assets that, she asserts, belong to them by her father’s express disposition.
Lina Vélez Gaviria Lawsuit: Claims of Ethuss Economic Violence
Seeking to protect the rights of the Lina Vélez minor children, the mother of the three kids decided to take the case to court. Lina filed a legal action (tutela), arguing she was a victim of Ethuss economic violence by the new administration.
Although the initial rulings did not favor her and they lost the Lina Vélez Gaviria lawsuit in two instances, the legal process recently took a major turn: the Constitutional Court selected the case for a thorough review.
Parallel Files in the Courts
While Lina awaits the constitutional review, Sandra’s legal defense does not stop. Her lawyers continue to summon key witnesses—including Lina’s husband—with the goal of reconstructing minute by minute the incident of the patriarch’s fall and his clinical transfer.
Currently, the file investigating the details of the death and the million-dollar succession are running in parallel. It is a battle on two fronts: one sister operationally controls the companies, while the other demands before the judges that her father’s last written will be read and respected.
