As the nation grapples with high-stakes electoral tensions and the recent provisional suspension of President Gustavo Petro’s functions by the House of Representatives’ Accusations Committee, a new wave of controversy has erupted in the department of Risaralda. Local political circles are sounding the alarm over allegations of a massive vote-buying scheme involving millions of pesos.
The accusations center on the current Governor of Risaralda, Juan Diego Patiño Ochoa. According to reports circulating within the region, the young governor allegedly received 7 billion pesos in cash intended for electoral operations. Other local sources have estimated that the total sum involved in the scheme could be as high as 13 billion pesos.
The Alleged Scheme
The strategy reportedly involves paying up to 300,000 pesos per vote, with an ambitious target of securing at least 1.5 million ballots across various regions. Experts note that the sheer volume of capital required to execute such a plan suggests a sophisticated operation, which critics allege is being financed, in part, by funds diverted from the national administration during the final days of the Petro government.
Calls for Immediate Intervention
These developments have placed immense pressure on Colombia’s oversight bodies. With public trust already fragile due to ongoing national scandals and the president’s current legal status, civil society leaders and political analysts are urging the Office of the Attorney General (Fiscalía), the National Electoral Council (CNE), and the Inspector General’s Office (Procuraduría) to launch immediate investigations.
“If confirmed, this would not only undermine the democratic process but would further perpetuate cycles of poverty and clientelism,” stated local advocacy groups.
Governor Patiño Ochoa, a Liberal party politician who took office in 2024 as one of the youngest governors in the country, has yet to issue a formal response regarding these specific accusations. As the region moves toward the upcoming elections, the demand for transparency and accountability has become the central focus, with citizens and institutions alike called upon to safeguard the integrity of the ballot box against the influence of illicit funds.
